Over the past 30 years, snow has been recorded in Mykolaiv on Christmas and New Year's Eve in less than a third of cases.

This is evidenced by long-term meteorological observations of the Mykolaiv Regional Centre for Hydrometeorology.

In particular, On 24 December, there was snow in the city in 10 out of 30 years. The last time it was recorded was in 2021. In the period from 2022 to 2024, no snow cover was observed on Christmas Eve.

On Christmas Day, 25 December, it snowed in Mykolaiv 9 times in 30 years. After 2016, snowy Christmas was also recorded only once — in 2021.

The least frequent snowfall in Mykolaiv was observed on 31 December — only in 7 cases. The most significant year was 2014, when the snow cover completely covered the ground.

In a commentary to NikVesti, a representative of the Mykolaiv Hydrometeorological Centre, Deputy Head of the Mykolaiv Regional Centre for Hydrometeorology Valentyna Hurieva, noted that snow cover was recorded more often in the northern districts of the region, in particular in Pervomaiskyi district.

«We only record cases when snow is on the soil surface and stays there. If it melts immediately or does not cover the entire surface, such snow is not considered snow cover,» she said.

According to her, in Mykolaiv, three permanent snow gauges are installed at the meteorological site to measure the snow cover, and portable gauges are used on routes, after which the average is determined.

Earlier, weather forecasters predicted that the coming winter in Ukraine could be record cold, with Arctic frosts, long snow periods and sharp weather fluctuations.
