In Mykolaiv, 25 containers have been installed to collect plastic lids. The collected waste is recycled, and the proceeds are used for prosthetics.
This initiative was implemented by young people and the NGO «Perspectives of the 21st Century» with the financial support of Bloomberg Philanthropies, NikVesti reports.
Viktor Sikalenko, head of the municipal institution «Mykolaiv Development Agency», told us that the idea for the project was developed by young people together with the NGO «Perspectives of the XXI Century». The technical implementation is provided by the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks»: the team made and installed leaf-shaped containers.
«Plastic waste worsens the environmental situation and contributes to the negative effects of climate change. To avoid additional CO₂ emissions during the decomposition of the waste, it was important that it be recycled rather than left on the ground. The project was selected through a jury vote: each project received points, and this one was included in the 18 funded initiatives,» Viktor Sikalenko told NikVesti.
Where do plastic lids go next?
The municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks» collects the lids and passes them on to the NGO «Association of Law-Conscious Citizens». They recycle the waste and use the proceeds to provide prosthetics to people in need. The first general collection of lids has already taken place — about 200-300 thousand pieces have been handed over. According to Olena Dorhalis, a foreman of Zavodskyi district for the improvement of parks and squares of the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks», the next collection is scheduled for December.
«Since the beginning of the installation of the containers, the employees have made one general collection of lids, which were handed over to the NGO. About 200-300 thousand lids were handed over. The next general collection of lids and their transfer is planned for December,» Olena Dorhalis told NikVesti.

What is known about the cooperation between Bloomberg Philanthropies and Mykolaiv?
In April 2024, it became known that Mykolaiv was included in the list of 100 cities that will receive funding from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund to implement projects aimed at addressing climate issues.
According to chief architect Yevhen Poliakov, the main requirement for working on projects is to involve active students who will generate ideas for new interesting urban locations. At the same time, about $10,000 of the amount provided was allocated for training and professional development of students.
In 2025, Mykolaiv received $100,000 in funding from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund to implement climate initiatives proposed by local youth. As part of the competition, 18 eco-projects were selected out of 26 ideas submitted to be implemented by the end of this year.
We also wrote that Eco Mobile Park, a space for recreation and environmental education, was recently opened in Mykolaiv at the yacht club, which was set up by a team of young people from the NGO «From Idea to Action» with financial support from Bloomberg Philanthropies.
